A Quick Guide to Volleyball Fundamentals
Learning volleyball fundamentals is important if you take this game seriously. Keeping in mind that the main purpose to any game is to win; this is just a fact. There really is no purpose to playing a game except to win. Although winning a sporting event may be much more important to those that are professionals that are playing to win so that we can have a bigger paycheck, most people who play a sporting game at least have some desire to win.
No matter if you win or lose, every type of game has some type of rules that must be followed, and volleyball is no different. Becoming familiar with volleyball fundamentals will not make you the best player or a professional, but what it will do is help you to have a fun and pleasant experience when you are playing.
Some of the basic volleyball fundamentals include,
Underhand and Overhand Serves – Nearly all games that involve a ball require that one of the first actions in the game be to serve the ball, and in the case of volleyball, that is to send the ball over the net toward the opposing team. There are two different ways to serve the ball in this game, one is with an overhand serve and the other is the underhand serve. The method of the overhand serve requires that the ball be tossed into the air with one hand, and the player will use the other hand to send it over the net. With the underhand serve, the ball is kept in the hand and hit from beneath to send it over the net.
Passing and Receiving – Some additional volleyball fundamentals involve passing and receiving. This is the process of passing the ball across the net and receiving the ball when it comes to your side of the net. Knowing how to do this is important due to the fact that if it is not done correctly the ball will not stay in the game. A player must pass the ball with their forearm, and this move includes one of the most strategic parts of the game, and that is making your opponents unsure about how far the ball will go over the net.
Spiking – Knowing how to spike the ball is another of the volleyball fundamentals and is one of the most strategic skills you can learn when it comes to this game. This involves sending the ball over the net in a way that it will nosedive on the other side, giving the opposing team no opportunity to receive the ball.
Some important tips of Volleyball fundamentals include,
- Knowing how to move when playing volleyball is a significant part of playing the game; you will need to know how to anticipate where the ball will go, and how to move in order to hit the ball.
- Playing the game correctly is also important. You cannot just move anywhere you want while on the court; each player has an area where they are suppose to be and they will need to stay in that area.
- The better your reflexes are, the better you will be able to play this game. Practice will help you to develop good reflexes for volleyball.
- Learning how to connect to the ball will help your game tremendously. Developing your own technique for this is something that takes time, but the more you play volleyball the easier this gets.
